UK Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds, announced over the weekend Britain’s plans to soon  increase investment and boost trade partnership in Tanzania, the Daily News reported. Simmonds took a two-day tour of  the country, meeting with officials including President Jakaya Kikwete, foreign minister Bernard Membe and energy minister Sospeter Muhongo.

“I am very pleased to have agreed with His Excellency President Jakaya Kikwete that we should launch a new UK-Tanzania prosperity partnership to increase trade and investment,” Simmonds said in the report. “The idea is to support Tanzania’s development and generate prosperity and employment opportunities for both the UK and Tanzania.”

According to the Daily News, the business environment, oil and gas, agriculture and renewable energy sectors will be impacted by the partnership. To further solidify plans, Simmonds said that he has extended an invitation to Tanzania’s agriculture minister Christopher Chiza, to visit the UK.

In late June, All Africa reported that UK Secretary of State for International Development Justine Greening visited Tanzania to gage the effectiveness of the UK’s development efforts in the country.

Greening made stops at a Kilombero Valley rice plantation and the Capital Markets and Securities Exchange in Dar es Salaam.

“I want to see for myself how Britain’s development effort can make a difference on the ground,” Greening said in All Africa‘s report.

The UK is looking to help Tanzania by utilizing the country’s natural resources as a foundation for growth. According to All Africa, the UK pledged a 180 million pound sterling (roughly $271 million) investment in Tanzania’s 2013/2014 development. The pledge will largely target Tanzania’s poverty stricken communities.

All Africa reported that by 2015, the UK’s efforts will have provided 650,000 rural area Tanzanians with clean water access, one million women a year with family planning access as well as access to financial services for 741,000.
