Some African leaders are highly educated, and these qualifications help them to run their countries and lead their people.

Robert Mugabe – Zimbabwe

The controversial leader of the Southern African country is able to call on his extensive education for solutions to the leadership challenges he faces. Mugabe can lay claim to seven degrees, including a BA degree from the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, two Law degrees, a Master of Science degree, and further qualifications in Administration and Education.

Ibrahim Boubacar Keita – Mali

President of Mali since 2013, Keita is a highly educated individual, with qualifications that have seen him studying around the globe. With a Master of Political Science degree and a Masters in History, Keita is very well versed in these subjects, having spent time studying in Paris, Bamako and Dakar. He is amongst the most well qualified African heads of state.

Dr Ameenah Gurib-Fakim – Mauritius

If education and politics go hand in hand, then Dr Gurib-Fakim is an example to her people. The president of Mauritius moved to the UK when she was younger, acquiring a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. She would add to those studies at Exeter University, when she earned a PhD in Organic Chemistry.

Dr Mulatu Teshome – Ethiopia

Ethiopian president Teshome has held this ceremonial position for his country since 2013. He previously served as Ethiopia’s ambassador to China, Japan and Turkey as well as Ethiopia’s minister of agriculture. Having studied at Peking University in China, he acquired a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy of Political Economy, as well as a Doctorate in International Law. Though he does not lead his country in the same way as the prime minister does, he was given the ceremonial position via a unanimous parliamentary vote.

The economist has grown the West African country’s economy since his rise to the presidency, and his qualifications have helped him to accomplish this. American-educated, Ouattara has a Bachelor of Science degree from Drexel University in Pennsylvania, while he also earned a Master’s degree in Economics and a PhD in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr Peter Mutharika – Malawi

The Malawian head of state is another of Africa’s well educated leadership, having studied in the UK and the US. He acquired a Law degree from the University of London, before earning his LL.M and Doctor of the Science of Law degrees from Yale University in the United States.

King Mohammed VI – Morocco

The Moroccan Monarch is very well educated, having earned his Baccalaureate before acquiring a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Mohammed V University. Further study allowed him to obtain qualifications in Political Sciences and Public Law, before earning his PhD in law from the Nice Sophia Antipolis University in France.

Amongst the most well-educated of African heads of state, Dr Thomas Boni Yayi guides his country with a long list of qualifications in his arsenal. Yayi graduated with a Masters degree in Economics from the National University of Benin, before repeating that same qualification at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Senegal. He then went on to earn his Doctorate in Economics and Politics at the University of Orleans in France, before obtaining a further Doctorate in Economics at the Paris Dauphine University.
