Tourism from India almost doubled in the last five years and South African tourism officials hope to build on that success with food – Indian food, that is.

Top chefs from around South Africa will visit India in September to learn about Gujarati cooking as part of an effort to woo more tourists, according to a Times of India report.

In 2012, 1,06,000 Indians visited South Africa. Seven percent were Gujaratis. South Africa tourism is conducting “Learn South Africa” sessions with Indian travel agents to help them understand the African country better, the report says.

The majority of South Africans of Indian descent live in and around the city of Durban, making it the largest Indian city outside India.

“This makes India a big market for us,” said Hanneli Slabber, country head for South Africa tourism.

In 2011, South African restaurants started serving North and South Indian and South African Indian food for Indian tourists, according to Times of India.
