Caster Semenya’s Alleged Traditional Wedding Photos Set Social Media On Fire

Social media across South Africa and regionally was a buzz on Monday after photo’s of South African Olympic gold medallist Caster Semenya appeared on Facebook showing her celebrating a traditional wedding ceremony with her long time girlfriend.

Pictures published on Facebook by SA Fame Awards, part of Limpopo Media, showed Semenya and her fiancée and fellow athlete, Violet Raseboya, dressed in traditional attire during a traditional wedding in Ga-Dikgale in the Capricon District of Limpopo.

“Caster Semenya gets hitched!” the outlet tweeted with a link to the photos. On their Facebook page however, they reported the pictures of Caster and Violet dancing in bright purple outfits were from an engagement party.

“The happy couple seemed relaxed and calm while villagers ululated while others nodded in approval of this union,” they wrote.

Semenya first shot to stardom in 2009 when she won gold in the women’s 800m at the IAAF’s World Championships in Berlin, before being controversially subjected to gender testing.

She was cleared and won the silver medal at the 2011 World Championship in Daegu.

Semenya’s greatest achievement to date was a silver medal in the 800m at the 2012 London Olympics.

However, Semenya was quick to dispel those reports, saying, “There is no wedding. Don’t believe the rumours you read in the news,” Semenya said according to the Sowetan website.
