The IAAF named Ethiopian middle-distance runner Genzebe Dibaba and American decathlete Ashton Eaton as World Athletes of the Year on Thursday.

Eaton, the former Oregon star who now trains with Oregon Track Club Elite in Eugene, was up against Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and American triple jumper Christian Taylor for his award.

They are some of the most talented and lovely performers of all time.

Along with winning gold and setting a world record in the 1500 at the Beijing World Championships, Diababa won a bronze medal in the 5000m event.

Meanwhile, Dibaba, who set a world indoor 5000m record of 14:18.86, was unbeaten in her 1500m races during the summer.

“I’m flattered to be among them”.

At the World Championships in Beijing, she was no less formidable.

Dibaba, 24, is the current world record holder in the women’s 1500m and holds three further world records indoors. In the process, he set a World Championships decathlon record of 10.23 seconds in the 100 meters, and broke a 40-year-old world decathlon record with a time of 45.00 in the 400m.

“Thanks to the Caribbean Sports Award organised by the Caribbean Sports Journalists’ Association for choosing me as the Sports Man of the Year #‎Honoured”.

“My focus in 2016 will be the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland and as preparation for that I will try to break the world indoor mile record in Stockholm on 17 February”.

Part of the fallout from the recent doping revelations surrounding the IAAF and Russian Federation was IAAF president Seb Coe’s announcement that the World Athletics Gala, which had been due to be held in Monaco to present the awards, would be cancelled as it was “not the time for the athletics family to be gathering in celebration of our sport”.

Hill is the 2015 Gatorade National Girls Athlete of the Year and has won 92 consecutive races through the 2015 season.
