Chinese Drug Firm Builds Modern Medicine Factory In Mali

A Chinese company has built the first modern medicine production plant in Mali, which it says will produce cheap drugs for the West African markets as well as create job opportunities locally, CCTV Africa reported.

Humanwell Pharmaceutical Africa, part of China’s Humawell Group, is the first modern drug company in the region and focuses on developing products that address the large unmet healthcare needs.

“Three years ago the Humanwell Group planned to enter the African market and we were ready to set up the project here. At that time the Mali military coup occurred, which resulted in many foreign companies evacuating from Mali,” said Li Wensheng, general manager of Humanwell Pharmaceutical Africa, said.

“After a comprehensive analysis of the situation we finally decided to invest in Africa. After almost two year of unrelenting efforts we established a modern factory in such a desolating desert and our products not only enable us to meet the need of Mali, but also the need of West Africa,” he added.

The Shanghai Stock Exchange-listed company, in collaboration with the China-Africa Development Fund (CAD Fund), entered the Mali market in 2009 and in Burkina Faso in 2010 to serve the West African countries.

The Mali drug company started operating in January 2015.

“We are proud of having the biggest factory of pharmaceuticals products in West Africa,” said Oumar Ba, a factory worker at the Mali factory, said.
