High season is about to begin for South African tourism.
A new survey from TravelMag.com compared 30 popular South African destinations based on the cost of lodging for the upcoming season, December 2015 to March 2016.
Only centrally located hotels or guest houses with a rating of at least 3 stars are included in the survey. Rates are based on the average rate for the least expensive double rooms in the hotels polled.
All rates were established in mid November by the hotel comparison engine Kayak.
Here we’ve included the 10 most expensive destinations out of 30 destinations polled.
As a basis for comparison, Port Elizabeth is the least expensive destination in South Africa out of the 30 polled. Visitors should be able to find a room in Port Elizabeth during the high season for about 500 rand ($35.19 USD) per night, according to the survey.

10. Paternoster 820 rand ($57.70 USD)
Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast of South Africa, located about 145 km north of Cape Town between Saldanha and St. Helena bays. It has a population of 1883. Many people believe that the name– “Our Father” in Latin — refers to prayers said by Catholic Portuguese sailors when they were shipwrecked. As a tourist destination it’s known for its white-washed fishermen’s cottages and for lobster. The coastline of jagged cliffs and white boulders makes it home to one of the most beautiful beaches on the West Coast of South Africa. Tourist and commercial activities include deep sea fishing for snoek, farming for abalone, mussels and oysters, and pilchard canning.
