Gervinho Settles Roman Derby With Fine Performance

Cote D’Ivoire striker Gervinho was in incredible form during Roma’s derby match in Serie A against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday afternoon, helping the Giallorossi to a decisive 2-0 victory over their bitter city rivals.

The Ivorian displayed scintillating moments of class throughout an encounter that is amongst the most eagerly anticipated on the Italian calendar, showing confidence going forward and troubling the Lazio defenders on numerous occasions.

Edin Dzeko was fouled in the box, and opened the scoring for Roma with a penalty that he smacked down the middle to put his side in front, but it was consistent hard work and pace from Gervinho that kept the blue half of Rome under pressure.

The sustained pressure kept Lazio from venturing forward, and in the second half Gervinho made sure of the victory by collecting Nainggolan’s through ball and speeding past defender Dusan Basta before slotting an excellent finish that beat Marchetti at his near post.

With the score at 2-0 the game was beyond Lazio, and Rudi Garcia decided to substitute his Ivorian starlet to rest him and allow the fans to give him a standing ovation for a performance worthy of the occasion.

Gervinho’s big match temperament and ability to use his pace to give Roma the advantage proved enough to secure the win, and cement his reputation as a reliable match-winner.

Gervinho was one of the major contributors to a successful title winning campaign at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Equatorial Guinea at the beginning of the year.

It seemed that the versatile player would leave the Italian Serie A during the pre-season transfer market window, with a move to Al Jazira on the cards, but it fell through and he remained with the club from the capital, much to the delight of Roma supporters who continue to enjoy his excellent performances for the team.
