Duma Works, a Kenyan online and text message based recruitment startup, has created a platform for agricultural firms and rural farmers in the country to connect with prospective qualified employees, the company said on Tuesday.

The application is targeted at Kenya’s fast growing agribusiness sectors which account for more than 60 percent of jobs in the country of about 45 million people and contribute about over 20 percent of the largest East African economy.

“This effort began with a mutual desire to ensure employers in the agriculture and seed sector have access to the tools they need to hire the right human capital and grow their businesses,” Arielle Sandor, founder of Duma Works, said in a statement.

“Agribusinesses are significant drivers of the Kenyan economy and it’s critically important to give them the staffing support they need to thrive.

Duma Works has partnered with Agri Experience, a consulting firm focused on improving Kenya’s seed sector, and the Kenya Market Trust, an organization that linkup government and private sector in creating incentives for entrepreneurs.

Aline O’Connor of Agri Experience said that rural agribusiness entrepreneurs need employees that understand how to increase productivity “and have a deep knowledge of the seeds and other inputs farmers need”.

With increased internet penetration in Africa the recruitment sector is leveraging on its ease of communication to connect employers and employees on a continent where unemployment is too high due to skills and jobs mismatch.

“Technology is enabling companies in Kenya, like companies across the globe, to expand rapidly by facilitating a more efficient hiring process,” Sandor told BBC in a previous interview.

Other recruitment firms that have sprung up across Africa to take advantage of the growing tech space include Byte Orbit in South Africa, Jobberman in Nigeria and Duma Work’s Kenyan Rival Kama Kazi in Kenya.

Duma Works was launched in 2014 and was funded by a seed round wih angel investors and the Rockefeller Foundation.

It has signed up more than 250 employers and 40,000 job seekers. Over 5,000 job matches have been made from this data base it has built in less than a year.
