Nigerian Strikers Martins And Adi To Feature In Major League Play Offs

Nigerian strikers Obafemi Martins and Fanendo Adi will be flying the flag of their nation in the Major League Soccer (MLS) play offs with their respective club teams.

Former Super Eagles attacker Martins has been in scintillating form for his club side, the Seattle Sounders, and managed to score an impressive 15 goals during the campaign up until this point, contributing to a positive season and reaching the play offs.

Adi also managed to score 15 goals for the Portland Timbers, and his attacking prowess has allowed to MLS team to push for honours thanks to their qualification for the play off stage.

Both Martins and Adi will therefore be active in the Western Conference play offs this week, with the Seattle Sounders hosting LA Galaxy on Wednesday, while the Portland Timbers do battle with Sporting Kansas City on Thursday.

Martins will be particularly eager to do well against the LA Galaxy, as his team were knocked out in the play offs last season, and he will be looking to do better and earn honours for his American club.

Martins made the MLS All-Star team earlier in the year, in recognition of the former Newcastle United, Levante and Inter Milan player’s excellent form for his Washington club.

With 18 goals for the Nigeria national team in 39 appearances, Martins has an impressive record for the Super Eagles, and is certainly making a case for a return to international action, but whether coach Sunday Oliseh will consider him remains to be seen.

The striker represented Nigeria at the 2006, 2008 and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, as well as the 2010 World Cup.
