Nigeria-based undersea cable firm MainOne has extended its submarine fibre cable to Cameroon, according to a report from This Day.

The Nigerian-Cameroon Submarine Cable System will also branch out to two strategic points in Nigeria’s south-south region — Escravos in Delta State and Qua Iboe in Akwa Ibom State — according to the report.

The new system spanning approximately 1,100 kilometers is being built in partnership with Cameroon Telecommunications and Huawei Marine Networks, with investment provided by the Cameroon government.

It is expected to deliver capacity of up to another 12.8 terabytes per second to broadband users there by the end of 2015.

“We have, and will continue to invest significantly in projects to accelerate broadband access, which is part of our strategy to boost the economic and commercial development of West Africa,” said Kazeem Oladepo,  MainOne’s regional executive for West Africa.
