Springbok Coach Meyer Pleased With World Cup Preparations

South African Rugby coach Heyneke Meyer has revealed that he is content with the preparations that the Springboks have made ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup which will take place in England during September and October.

The coach made these comments following the side’s 20-27 defeat to the All Blacks of New Zealand in Rugby Championship action on Saturday in Johannesburg.

The visiting team are current world champions following their World Cup victory in 2011, and despite the end result, the Springboks looked in good form for most of the game, dominating proceedings in the first half against a much more fancied All Black outfit.

New Zealand scored a late try to secure the victory in a match that could have gone either way, and Meyer admitted that the encounter was on a knife edge when speaking to the media after the test.

“I expected the match to be as tight as this. I thought we might have the luck with a TMO call in the second half, but like last weekend, it went against us. It is part of rugby, but I really thought we did enough to score there. That would have eased the pressure on us in the last couple of minutes as we would have had a ten point margin,” said Meyer, according to SuperSport.

Meyer went on to praise the mental strength and approach of his side as a good sign with the Rugby World Cup on the horizon.

“The guys know they can beat anyone. We came within inches of beating both the Wallabies and All Blacks and that is a massive improvement if you considered where we were just after the Vodacom Super Rugby competition. I know we are inches away from clicking. We produced some brilliant attack at times,” the coach added.

“We want to make the nation proud and need to win in order to do that. But I am pleased that we are progressing very well and it will be a very fit and strong squad of 31 that will travel to England,” he explained.
