Ghana has placed a ban on the importation of poultry and any poultry products from within the West African region to avert the spread an outbreak of bird flu in the country.

Farmers say the government has killed million of domesticated birds in the west African nation as the disease, that caused by the H1N1 virus, spread across a number of regional neighbors including Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger and Ivory Coast.

“Our borders are very tight because Burkina had it, Ivory Coast had it and we boarder with Nigeria through Togo. So we are very strict at the our borders right now to make sure that we not only get in poultry but any form of bird or any products of birds or poultry through our borders,” Hanna Bisiw, Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, told CCTV Africa.

West Africa, a region still recovering from an Ebola virus outbreak last year, has not reported any human infections.

More than 35 countries worldwide have been affect by an outbreak of bird flu since early last year, affecting millions of birds but has not yet made the jump on to humans so far.
